Complete description
Imagine discovering Montmartre under the wing of a freedom fighter! A resistant and journalist who survived deportation to participate in the Liberation of France, the delegate of Paris’s 18th arrondissement Joël le Tac is inviting you to come away with him from the crowds of thousands choking Montmartre’s streets. He will lead you through the lesser known cobblestone lanes to reveal a hidden literary heritage. Haunts and hangouts of renowned writers, poets, singers will hold no more secrets for you. You will feel the creative inspiration taking the likes of Picasso and Modigliani as they painted their groundbreaking masterpieces.
You’ll also learn of beloved French writers, giants of the Paris literary scene little known outside of France, such as Aristide Briant, cabaret comedian and singer who captured the imagination of Toulouse Lautrec, or Gerard de Nerval poet with his pet lobster that he walked like a dog on a leash. Later came Roland Dorgéles who imagined a man who could pass through walls, an enviable talent under the German Occupation, and then again there was Pierre Mac Orlan with his sharp eye on the area’s notorious riffraff.
And while you absorb the atmosphere and adventure of days gone by, you’ll be gaining insight into how vibrant, diverse Montmartre shaped the creativity the inhabitants that made famous.
But the tour is not just a list of names of yesteryear, for this neighborhood’s culture is alive and well. With your guide’s introductions, the warmth and authenticity of today’s locals will give you a firsthand feel for why the place is still so special.
